What Is The National Hockey League

The National Hockey League, or the NHL, is an unincorporated not-for-profit association.  The National Hockey League operated a major professional ice hockey league with 30 franchised teams, 6 of which are located in Canada, and 24 in the United States.  The National Hockey League is largely regarded as the premiere professional ice hockey league in the world.  Every year 30 teams compete to win the Stanley Cup, the oldest professional sports trophy in North America.  The National Hockey League was founded in 1917 in Montreal. In 2009, the National Hockey League reported record highs in TV ratings, sponsorships, and game attendance.
